Mitsos is a European brown bear who was taken from his mother as an early cub, when he was rescued in 1992 aged 7 he was found to have severe mouth and nose injuries. These injuries are normally caused from the nose/mouth being pierced before a metal ring is inserted-this is linked to a chain to control the bears.
The bears are forced to stand on hot metal plates causing them to instinctively stand on their hind feet, they have to shuffle and sway back and forth in a desperation to ease the pain in their feet.
The Arcturos Sanctuary in Northern Greece provides a safe home for Mitsos and other bears who would otherwise have to stay with their abusive keepers. Mitsos is unable to return to the wild, so the funds from this adoption scheme are used to care for him in his beautiful wooded five hectare sanctuary and other bears still in the wild.
