Writing a Valentines Day poem
When romance is in the air on Valentines Day there can surely be nothing more romantic than surprising that special someone with a poem you have composed yourself. Not only will they be touched by the effort you have made, but you will also have created something totally unique for them that no one else can replicate. The recipient will be able to treasure the poem for years to come reminding them of the Valentines Day you gave it to them. For many of you, the last time you wrote a poem will probably have been during your school days, and it's unlikely that you ever had to write a Valentines Day poem! Writing a poem can be challenging as, unless you are a writer, it's not going to be something you do every day; however don't be put off! Writing a poem is a beautiful way to express how you feel. There are a few ideas here to get you started, but remember your Valentine won't be expecting a literary masterpiece so don't stress too much, just write what comes from the heart.
Getting started
It might be best to start your writing session by thinking about the person you are writing about and brainstorming a few ideas on a sheet of paper. This will get things moving and you won't be left staring at a blank sheet of paper for hours on end putting pressure on yourself. It might also help to look at a photograph of your loved one or listen to some music that you both love and enjoy. Think about the things that have drawn you to the person you love and consider all aspects of their being (nature, personality, beliefs and looks,). Try and draw on some of things that only the two of you know about – although don't include anything too embarrassing, you want this to be a treasured possession. Stay away from very broad analogies and try to avoid clichés, you want to try and make this as unique as possible. Try and keep your writing as simple and as focused as possible.
Secondly think about how you want your poem to sound. Remember that not all poems have to rhyme, so don't start using silly words or phrases just to try and make it sing along. All poems should have some sort of natural rhythm when they are read aloud; this may not be evident until you have finished the piece, but try and pause every so often and read a few lines to try and help yourself along.
Getting into the groove
Once you have gathered a few ideas for your poem, start writing and try and let things flow as naturally as possible. Composing in the poem in a romantic setting will make things easier, and do it at a time when you know you won't be interrupted. You can guarantee you'll have something brilliant in your head and your pen poised when the door bell will go, and by the time you sit back down you will have forgotten what it was that was so amazing. You could also try and create a romantic atmosphere by lighting candles and burning oils.
Some thoughts on humour
If you want to use humour in your poem pause for a moment to consider how appropriate it will be. If you want to compose something to make your Valentine have a chuckle then that's fine, but don't include anything that would cause offence. If you want your poem to let your lover know exactly what you mean to them then using humour could distract from this powerful message.
The finishing touches
Once you have finished your poem, sit back and read it out loud – and really do this, don't just read it through in your head. There might be a couple of lines that need tweaking before it sounds perfect and what can sound fine in your head, sounds different when read out loud. Reading aloud will also highlight the rhythm of the poem, including those moments where you naturally pause. This could alter the sense of things if the punctuation and lay out of the poem is wrong. These are technical details so don't worry if it gets a bit confusing, it will be obvious when the poem is read through if things need changing. If you are feeling really brave then have a friend read it through just to get a second opinion.
Presentation
Finally present your poem to your Valentine in a beautiful and creative way. If you have good handwriting then you might like to write it out yourself using a good ink pen, failing that there are many beautiful fonts available if you choose to print it out. Select some fancy paper or card and try and find an envelope or elegant folder to place it in so you loved one will be able to keep your poem safely. You might like to add a boarder around your poem, this could be printed or hand drawn or even created out of something unusual like pretty fabric swatches or dried rose petals. Alternatively you could roll up your poem like a scroll and tie it with a ribbon, maybe even inserting a single red rose into the bow as an extra special touch.
Finally
You might also like to consider surprising your loved one with a Valentines Day gift to accompany their poem! This could be something small to commemorate Valentines Day such as a Valentines Day mug or photograph frame, or any of the little gifts that are themed around Valentines Day. For example you could choose something cheeky like a karma sutra game or a heart shaped cushion for your loved one to cuddle when you're not around.
You may not feel like the latest poet laureate, but expressing your emotions in this powerful and beautiful way is sure to make your Valentines heart melt. Give it a go and you won't be disappointed!
