Piggy Banks: A Short History
Many people have used piggy banks since the early 20th century to help them save up. This is especially used by many
children to store their coins and change to accumulate a bigger sum of money, especially if they are saving up for something they want to buy. The piggy bank is also called a money box or a penny bank and is usually made in the image of a pig made out of ceramic or porcelain. This was used as a device to teach children to be thrifty and to save up at a young age.
Piggy banks evolved from pygg, which was clay, used to make items such as jars. Back then; people used these pygg jars to store their money. After some time, the spelling for pygg has changed and had evolved into a pig bank. This also changed the context and the shape resembled more like pigs. The materials have also varied by using glass, plastic and plaster for making them. In Germany, pigs were considered a symbol of good fortune and luck and superstition had people keeping money in pig shaped containers to bring them good fortune.
Piggy banks are mostly used to store loose change and keep them in a nice and quaint container. Nowadays, they are not just made to look like pigs but are also made in different animal shapes of different sizes, colours and designs. Some people even have the hobby of collecting these as well.
The first few models for a piggy bank is the breakable ones, meaning, there is only a coin slot where you can put in your coins but there is no other way to get them out unless you break it. Nowadays, modern piggy banks have hidden slots that can be opened to take out the bank’s contents. They are usually placed on the belly portion or the snout of the
piggy bank. It can also detect the coin that is being placed inside it.
Many banking establishments usually give piggy banks as promotional giveaways to remind people to save up. They are also common as corporate gifts as well. This can help people to save up extra money by piling up their loose change and be able to spend it on something worthwhile when the amount accumulates. Piggy banks are very useful as it can help teach
kids the importance of savings, as well as adults in keeping their coins and loose change and turn it into something useful later on.
